Slack Wax

Wax is a product derived from refineries and is closely associated with oil. In refinery towers, wax is found near bitumen, with the main difference being their color. Bitumen is black, while wax ranges from dark to light brown. The initial product of the refinery is called slack wax, which can be heavy or light depending on its carbon chain and chemical elements.

Fifty years ago, slack wax was considered waste, and refineries had to pay extra to dispose of it in the suburbs. However, it has now become a popular and useful petrochemical product.

Refining Process of Slack Wax

The refining process of slack wax involves DE-oiling and DE-coloring in factories. The final product is paraffin wax, which can be fully refined or semi-refined, with oil content ranging from 0.5% to 7%. The residue left after extracting oil from slack wax and producing paraffin wax is called residue wax or foots oil, which also has industrial applications.

Slack wax is categorized into different grades based on oil content (5% to 35%) and melting point (50°C to 55°C). Its color varies from yellow to brown. Light and heavy slack wax are primarily used in the manufacturing of paraffin wax and the matches industry.

Slack Wax Packing

When it comes to packaging, lower oil grades of slack wax (5% to 15%) are packed in bags. However, for higher oil contents like light slack wax (30% oil), the only suitable packaging is steel drums to prevent leakage. Slack wax is strictly for industrial use and cannot be added to any cosmetic or food products until it undergoes a complete process.
